Welcome to KCPA on the Web! The Kansas City Pediatric Alliance is a community of pediatric therapy professionals, including physical and occupational therapists, speech/language pathologists, and special education teachers, who work together to improve opportunities for their clients across the Kansas City metro area. The group meets bimonthly to provide its members with a discussion forum for local topics, special presentations on the latest topics in pediactic care (including continuing education opportunities), community activities and more. Through this multi-disiplinary group, our goal is to empower our members to be able to deliver the highest quality care to Kansas City's children and their families.
What's next?
Special Evening Series - Tuesday, June 9th and Tuesday, June 16th:
The Pediatric Trunk: Posture, Positioning, and Respiration
This two-part presentation by Jodi Gamis, OTR/L, encompasses valuable information for all disciplines. Stablility, mobility, fine motor skills, and voice production all require a stable, flexible trunk, and Jodi will discuss ways to promote this in a variety of patients. The presentation format will include a lecture portion the first evening and lab portion on the second evening, so attendance on both dates is recommended.
Note: This workshop is open to non-members as well.
July Members' Meeting - Tuesday, July 7: KCPA's own Catherine Thompson, PhD, MS, PT and Kendra Gagnon, MPT, will present the topic Enabling Participation for Children with Special Needs: A New Framework for Clinical Decision Making. The World Health Organization International Classification of Functioning, Disability, and Health (ICF) is a framework for clinical decision-making that helps therapists develop comprehensive care plans for children with special needs, enabling these children and their families to more fully participate in meaningful home, community, and social activities. In this presentation, case studies will be used to illustrate how this new framework encourages collaborative service delivery, guiding therapists toward developing goals, selecting tests and measures, and creating plans of care based on families' changing priorities, while considering personal and environmental barriers to participation. This new perspective enables effective, evidence-based clinical decision-making and offers exciting possibilities for networking and developing resources to meet the needs of families and communities. Please come and share your ideas for resources and networking.
